Austin Press Release April 17, 2008 18th Annual World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend Central Texas Locations: Zilker Park, Circle R Ranch, & Twin Parks Country Club Disc Golf is catching on. The sales of golf discs have been growing consistently for the last 5 years at a rate of 15-20%...making disc golf a sport worth exploring. There are over 50 disc golf courses in Central Texas including the one at Zilker Park. The World’s Biggest Disc Golf Weekend was created in Austin, Texas in 1991 by John Houck, a two-time World Champion in Freestyle Frisbee and disc golf's premier course designer. The WBDGW has grown to be an international event, with over 50 cities and 8 countries participating worldwide. The very first event was held at Zilker Park -- the first course Houck designed -- and this year we will be holding it there again on Sunday May 4th hosted by Play it Again Sports. There will be two other locations where people can play: the disc golf course at Twin Parks Country Club in Dripping Springs on Saturday May 3rd which will be hosted by Disc Nation, and John Houck’s Circle R Ranch in Wimberley on May 3rd and May 4th. Part of the amazing growth of disc golf stems from the annual World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend. Over the last 18 years, the WBDGW has introduced tens of thousand of players to the sport and helped install two dozen new courses. The event is disc golf's version of a "fun run," with an emphasis on participation rather than competition. “This years disc golf event’s goal is to raise at least $25,000 locally for Council on AT-Risk Youth (CARY) and the Disc Golf Foundation. We want to support CARY so that they can continue to help our at-risk youth in partnership with the public education system.” says John Houck, a CARY Board Member. To promote the cause, Houck is hoping to draw a record number of players in the Austin area. “We want everybody to come out, especially those who have never played disc golf before.” The entry fee is $25, and all participants will get an event t-shirt and a free golf disc.
